While the gunshots had spurted their deafening thunder, they had hardly noticed the thrumming heartbeat from the furnace anymore, but now it crawled back into their consciousness. Alexander aimed for the eye, hit and the light was extinguished.ĭUM-da-DUM. No matter where they moved, the red eye followed them doggedly, firing its deadly beam. The second one was still shooting though, and it was a decent shot. Although the pylons did not show visible signs of being hurt, Donovan hit the first one in the upper area where its beam weapon was and it just fell off. The leg of his pants were smoking, where the protective light from his belt had not reached, but otherwise he seemed fine.ĭonovan fired his shotgun from the ground, which was also a relief to his still hurting shoulder compared to shooting while standing upright. He then raised his pistol and shot his gun at the exact moment that the pylon fired its deadly beam.ĭonovan, Fiona and Pepe watched in horror, as the bullet struck some sparks off the pillar, seemingly ricocheting off without doing anything useful while their companion was engulfed in red light.Ī bright blue cocoon lit up around him and the energy beam dissolved, leaving him seemingly unharmed, although he looked a bit shaken. "I sure hope, this works." he muttered under his breath. It singed his arm, the fabric of his poncho started to smolder, but he quickly managed to put it out, before there was any danger of him catching fire.Īlexander meanwhile still stood there in direct view of the column and fumbled with the belt he had found in the mine. Pepe also dove for cover, getting behind some ice covered chunks just in time as the pillars fired a bright red beam in his direction. They were all too shocked to move for a precious second, then Donovan called out "Get into cover!" and threw himself to the ground, pulling his sister down with him. A red glow started in the upper part of the device. The had been concealed by the ice, which had shattered, where the machines came up. They turned around in alarm and were just in time to see two pylons appear out of rectangular holes in the floor. They were still contemplating whether to enter the room or turn around, when suddenly the ground behind them started vibrating. The sound was repulsing and fascinating at the same time. It pulsated with a dull, throbbing sound that reminded them of the beating of a giant heart. The group stepped through an opening into a big chamber with some kind of furnace that took up the most part of the enormous room. There was also a red glow illuminating the ice walls now and they could see that the walls were sweating, little puddles of water had formed on the floor and the occasional icy drip of water found its way onto their hats. They walked a bit in the direction Alexander had pointed and indeed, the temperature was rising a little bit. Donovan was glad for a reason to avoid his sister's anger and redirect her attention. "Hey, this way it's getting a little warmer," Alexander called. "You okay? Or do you want to get back?"įiona just scowled and walked past him briskly. "That's what we came for, isn't it? Looking around?" Donovan grinned, then became serious and gave his sister a concerned look. where to now?" Pepe asked, "Taking a look around? This corridor doesn't look very exciting, does it?" Alexander gave her his jacket and only kept the poncho, which made it a little better, but her mostly bare legs were still the weak point in her attire. She was dressed for warmer climates and her teeth started clattering immediately, although she tried to suppress it bravely.
She gasped, as she stepped out and the cold hit her. Donovan was sure he had snatched up some more of the explosives lying around the room they had just left.Īnd directly behind him came Fiona. Moments later, Pepe appeared next to them, still fumbling with his satchel. He had drawn his coat and poncho around tighter and had started shivering. The ice sheets on the walls, floor and even ceiling of the corridor he was now standing in glittered in the lantern light.Īlexander was already looking around with eyes wide with wonder. Lifeless, even, as if anything living and breathing was not welcome here. The cold air bit his lungs as he took his first breath in the other world.
The next step was already easier, then he was surrounded by light, the sounds from his companions in the mine faded and he stepped out on the other side. Cold air came at him from the other side and made his breath fog even before he made it into the gate. Not the greatest choice for final words, he thought.
Then he sighed and squared his shoulders. Donovan looked at the swirling mass of light that Alexander had vanished trough.
